What do you think about the iPhone?
The wait is over — and the most-anticipated cell phone in years is now on sale. Tell us what you think about iPhone-mania. Did you buy one? If so, is it worth it? Submit your personal review here — and see what other readers are saying.
I have not purchased one, yet. I have played around with other peoples iPhones. These are awesome machines and everybody who has them raves about them. My perception is that there is negative energy out there to try and make them look bad for whatever reason, but my honest opinion is that they are revolutionary. I have come to have great disdain for the lack of intuitivess and feature poor RAZR that I raved about two years ago when I got it.
The AT&T or Cingular network name would actually depend on the SIM card not the handset itself.
All the phone sees is a network ID code. The sim translates that into the correct network name. If it’s a more recently issued Cingular/AT&T SIM the phone will display AT&T rather than Cingular.
The iPhone is going to have to support at the very least basic 3G before it launches in Europe and elsewhere. A ’smart phone’ without 3G in Europe would be like trying to sell a laptop that could only be connected to the web with a 56k modem, you’d get laughed at rather hard.
Most of the higher end smartphones support full HSPDA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) which gives speeds of 3.6 and 7.2mbit/s on some of the networks already and up to 14.4mbit is possible with current rolled out technology!
HSPA Evolved promises 42Mbit/s !!!
Also, it’s a terrible shame that the iPhone doesn’t link to the apple laptops by bluetooth for data access i.e. using the iPhone as a bluetooth modem. That would be a rather nice feature in Europe anyway where there is plenty of HSPDA (3GSM). I’m already using my Sony Ericsson as a data modem on a 3G network and it is sooo useful. Broadband anywhere!
I wasn’t going to get the iPhone. I watched the craziness on TV & saw it on the news this past weekend and I resisted. I’m usually the first in line to get new gadgets &/or try new things…I just didn’t see this as being that necessary of a thing to have.
Then I went to the mall Sunday afternoon to pick up a pair of shoes and it was over! While strolling through the mall I passed the Apple store & saw the crowds and thought I’d at least pop in to take a look at one up close.
I was amazed at how COOL it was, how easy it was to use, and afte playing with it a few minutes I just had to have it.
10 minutes later, and $599 poorer than I had originally planned, I left the mall with my new shoes…& my new 8gb iPhone!
Setting it up was a BREEZE. From start to finish I don’t think it took longer than 15 minutes. All of my Safari bookmarks transferred over easily as well as my contacts from my Mac.
I’ve been using it for three days now & I have to honestly say I don’t think I could live without it! Yes, other phones might do similar things (& cost less), but I none of them do it as well as this one…& in such a beautiful package!
I hope that the newer versions in the next year or two have more of the “missing” features that alot of people are complaining about now (ability to hold more songs, GPS, ability to test message people, easily replaceable battery), but for the moment I am 110% satisfied with my iPhone!
I bought and it’s fantastic. It’s a major step in the next generation of phones. Anyone who bets against Apple must have ” Irocks” for brains.Jobs has done it again, bravo!!
The reason the US is behind the ball when it comes to 3G/HSPDA roll out has been entirely down to the FCC who, yet again, failed to plan the spectrum needed for 3G roll out. Their initial idea was to squish ‘3GSM’ (UMTS) into the same 1900mhz spectrum used by the existing 2G CDMA and GSM carriers. It would never have worked.
European 3G’s been quite a long time in the planning process and the spectrum was ring fenced for it years ago. ‘3GSM’ phones operate on 2100Mhz downlink + 1900 mhz uplink.
This is standard across all European implementations of 3GSM/UMTS. It’s also been the standard adopted worldwide outside the US and Canada.
The US has this at the moment:
AT&T / Cingular are using 1900mhz / 850mhz independently as both uplink and downlink!
T-Mobile USA and others are using 2100Mhz (downlink) / 1700Mhz(uplink) for America
If the mobile network in the US could have, believe me they would have rolled out 3GSM/UMTS nationally in the same kind of time frame as their European counterparts. It’s nothing to do with lack of demand, technological differences or market differences. It’s simply a case that the FCC didn’t do its job properly.
There was a similar mess with the roll out of digital mobile phones in the first place too!
It would make sense for Apple to avoid 3G in the US for the timebeing until the FCC and the network operators come to some kind of sensible agreement on spectrum planning. The current system would simply mean the phones are going to have to support way more frequencies than they should need to.
In Europe 3G service is an ‘add on’ pretty much. 3GSM / UMTS is fully backwards compatable with 2.5G ‘traditional GSM’. So, basically if you’re in a 3G coverage area you have massively fast data transfer rates as well as all your normal voice/text services and if you’re not in a 3G area, you’ll fall back onto your carrier’s normal 2.5G GSM/EDGE/GPRS network and will just have voice/text and slower data services.
It’s all very seamless.
They will have to provide a user-accessible SIM card as it’s legally required to have such a setup within the EU to allow customers to switch carrier and keep the handset once the network’s subsidy has been paid off.
Also, they’ll have to go with multiple carriers in Europe as even the very biggest networks like Vodafone, Orange, O2/Movistar and T-Mobile are not in absolutely every country. I’d say they’ll have to do quite a few deals to get into all of their European iTunes markets.
You can be sure though that the networks will want to get onto the marketing hype bandwagon that is iPhone though. It should be interesting to see who gets it.
The technology isn’t too unique anyway as AT&T (Cingular) is simply a GSM network. I can’t imagine they’ll have any issues rolling out visual voicemail etc etc on other GSM / 3GSM platforms in Europe and elsewhere.
So my advice is that once its out here (in Europe) the americans can get an iPhone here and use Verizon in US
I’m so glad my new iPhone isn’t made by Microsoft (or else I’d be having to replace my computer, operating system, and so on). My phone was up and running in a short time but I had to call the support line to completely shut off my old phone (my Sprint contract just expired). After that, I’ve been having nothing but fun playing w/ it and showing it off. Granted, there will always be people to complain (you can’t fly the space shuttle w/ it, it isn’t free, it doesn’t help you lose weight, etc.) but it does have a lot of great features rolled into one package and it’s a heck of a lot nicer than what I had before. For the people that bought it, tried it for 10 minutes and called it junk – it’s their loss if they don’t have the patience to check out all the features. No, this phone is not designed to hold your 10,000 song music collection or your entire video library but it has plenty of room for a fair amount of everything (even the 4 gig model). Everything is easy to access and the touch-screen is well – fun. I think Apple did a great job and while I’m sure there will be many improvements over time, I’m already impressed with what I have.
I ordered mine online and initially it said it would take 2 – 4 weeks and now it plans to ship in 1 – 2! Apple always underpromises and overdelivers! I have never been unsatisfied. I am also a cingular customer. What I don’t get is how AT&T didn’t plan for a million people trying to activate their phones the day they got them. As Homer Simpson says DOH! Anyway, so what is another day to activate since we have already waited 6 months. I got to play with one in the store and I was even more impressed with how light and sleek it was. I can’t believe that Jobs did it. The one thing I didn’t like is that the keyboard wouldn’t move to landscape so that the keys could be larger…that seems like an easy enough thing to do! I could barely type the correct keys with my index finger let alone miss altogether with my thumbs! I know for a fact they can still make it better but it has truly a generation of connected people.
iphone has no GPS option, no fm radio, and uses gsm and edge no umts/hsdpa
my sony has GPS option, fm radio, 2 megapixel camera, holds 4 gigs of music/vid with no need for extra software or expensive rate plans. my sony is a year old and cost me $40 bucks.
This is a grand slam, home run for Apple. There is nothing particularly wrong with AT&T. The phone will open up in a few years, but Apple had to have a phone company that would work wtih them. To their credit, that was AT&T (Some heads will roll at Verizon, or should, they actually passed on this deal.)
The only people that would argue otherwise are just in love with their primitive phones, or Microsoft shareholders, etc…
Anyone can see this is an awesome device.
People with an axe to grind here (again, the windows administrators, etc…) are refering to this as a ‘non-removeable’ or ‘non-replaceable’ battery? Are you that inept? I changed the battery in my iPod, it was a cinch. You order a kit and do it yourself if you want to save money and you have the dexterity of a sober person. There is a simple plastic tool to open it. Otherwise, you take it to an apple store or at and t store. Just like your WATCH for crying outloud. If you use your comptuer, it will automatically charge the iPhone. You need to connect it to your comptuer to sync contacts and such anyway. If you do this most days, you will never have to ‘charge’ it otherwise.
The iPhone has excellent battery life compared to most any of the primitive alternatives.
Not that you would have to connect to your comptuer, but it is designed for that, primarily. With the iPhone, you hardly even need a computer for 80% of the things you would do, at least you are much less likely to need one at home, you could probably just get by with the one you use at work.
Doesn’t work when you’re wearing gloves in cold weather! Must take your gloves off for the screen to work. Big problem for most of the country in January, maybe not for Steve Jobs in sunny Palo Alto.
I was in a mall with Apple store on Friday and witnessed the massive crowd gathered outside, waiting for the doors to open. I watched the crowd for about 15 minutes, before I went on my way. You would have thought Steve Jobs was inside giving away money! When the doors finally opened, people were let in just a few at a time. If you weren’t there to buy the iPhone, the security guards didn’t let you in at all. Quite a few people walked out of the store with two fresh new iPhones in hand, the Apple employees applauding as they left. I find this funny but also a sad sign of the times that so many were so willing to go to such lengths for a gadget.
This may not have all the features of other smartphones…no 3G, no picture messaging, no GPS. It is expensive and the mandatory 2 year contract with AT&T is a severe limitation.
That being said, when the iPod came out, people complained that it was too pricey and didn’t have the features of other MP3 players (no FM tuner, no Ogg Vorbis support, etc, etc). The iPhone will be just the same: it’s user interface is so far beyond anything I have seen on any other phone, people will forgive its flaws. The high price will limit it’s initial adoption, but I expect future iPhones that are cheaper and perhaps smaller.
Five years from now, you will either be using an iPhone or something that is directly inspired by it. It is that good.
I actually have an iPhone and love it. I wasn’t going to buy one, and waited until Saturday morning, went to the Apple store and after using it for 5 minutes, spent the $599. I usually have buyer’s remorse about purchases like this, but not in this case. You *have* to have it in your hands and use it to make a decision!
Definate fizzle. I compared my friends iPhone with my PocketPC only to find that my phone had nearly twice the features at less than half of the cost. Oh yeah, and I’m on Verizon’s unlimited BroadBand plan with GPS software and SlingBox software installed. Congratulations Steve Jobs, you’ve finally found a way to invent technology that has been obsolete for four years already. I think that may be a record!
The fact that one has to send the phone back to Apple in order to recharge the battery ( at an unspecified charge ) is one more instance of how Apple has nothing but contempt for its customers.
I am extremely pleased with this product. The ease of setup and the ease of use justify the purchase. I teach online classes and the product will enable me to keep in contact with students without having to find a hot spot when I am traveling. This is not a toy in my book, simply a way I can continue to work in situations where it use to be impossible.
I’ve purchased the iPhone and I LOVE it! It’s better than I had dared hope. As with other Apple products, set-up and initial use was intuitive and problem-free. From the sleek, economical packaging (the lack of manuals for every popular language was refreshing) to its seemless plug-and-play functionality (my motorola bluetooth headset paired with it easily)… it is everything I would expect from Apple. And then a little bit more.
The iphone is a great idea, and love the concept. But it is so sad that our society has become such a materalist group of people, and this is what it has come down to to make us happy. How sad! Whatever happen to simple times..enjoy it now, it is only superficial joy.
Obviously Sizzle…… Reporters are in queue to be the first to publish valid negative press on the iPhone or at&t service. They have mutual support from the competition’s top “techno geeks” who are undoubtedly putting in hours/days trying to sniff out any legitimate glitch in the launch . If a problem exists, it would have been published by now.
Just not impessed with the phone. Does nothing more than other smartphones, actually does less. Lack of a progamming API will ilmit program availability. My WM phone does everything the iphone does AND I also have TomTom on it to use for GPS navigations. Kudos to Apple on another successful marketing campaign!
An absolute blast. Got the phone after 45 minutes in line at the San Jose CA Valley Fair store (free coffee handed). I have downloaded the latest version of iTunes early on and had purchased a couple of songs to ensure all was well.
The phone got activated with in 3 minutes (converted my current cingular data plan to ATT iPhone). No glitches so far. Video from YouTube is smooth, my corporate email work like a charm, calendar and contacts are synched and my music collection and some photo albums are in as well as a couple of videos.
I spent the night managing my folks working on month end closing procedures, monitoring and updating the system via the corporate VPN “All from the iPhone’s Safari browser”.
iWait, iGot, iWork
I thought the lack of a hard keyboard would be more of an issue but it’s not. The fact that I drop half my calls in Phoenix and the other half sound like I’m talking through a tin can is a problem. It would be almost perfect if it wasn’t being used as a phone. The web browsing and pics are top-notch. Bottom line – I’m probably returning mine.
i think people need to stop thinking of this device as a phone….it is a handheld computer with phone access…as for the price….what did you just pay for the most basic laptop or desktop computer….internet access fees….a cell phone and user fees….hmmm…perfect device for first time buyers…..even glad i still have att stocks…..
All the hype reminds me when The CEO of Nokia told Bill Gates that the mobile phone would replace the computer someday. The only proplem (and a big one) is who wants to stare at a tiny screen to surf the web or watch movies!!! I am 38 years old and I know my eyesight is worse after looking at much larger computer screens 4 so many years. No way am I going to abuse my eyes more by staring at a tiny little screen. You younger people will understand this as u get older.
Some things to mention: 1. As a PDA/smarthone, it tops the major competion, include the Treo and all the Windows Mobile devices (try comparing it to a Verizon XV6700, as an example.) 2. It has the slickest web browser on any PDA/smartphone, bar non. No comparison to any Palm or WM device. 3. It is the best compromise for a keyboard, with more screen real estate for viewing. The Treo, Motorola Q, Blackjack, etc compromise with a much smaller screen and small keyboard. Other devices use a ’slide-out’ keyboard which is a pain and makes the device much thicker.
I didn’t buy iPhone, because $600 for locked phone + 2 years contract seems ridiculous. I agree if AT&T/Cingular give discount for iPhone they can do that. But buyers pay $600 for a phone should allow buyers use it in any network because buyers own the phone and owners should allow to decide which carrier they want to use their own product and they shouldn’t have string attached. I suggest if anybody who really want iPhone they should wait until they release it in Asia. I believe when APPLE release iPhone in Asia they won’t lock the phone because all phones (Nokia, SonyEricsson, Motorola, Samsung…etc. ) currently selling in Asia are manufacture unlocked. Only phones selling in U.S. are locked. I personally rather buy Nokia N95 because it also has wifi, better camera (5 megapixel auto focus), 3.5G phone, GPS, and most important it is a unlocked phone.
Looked good initially by as I started playing with more lost the enthusiasm Few gliches
- no easy way to exit from applications
- only web changes to landscape mode when you tilt it not other applications
- No muti-taksing possible only one application at a time ? Poor execution
- Brower text is not readable and tapping takes me to links by intention was to zoom!
Expect some learning curve. It is not intuitive as I though.
Good luck guys
Target market = 15-25 year olds….they can’t afford the price of the Apple product and AT&T service. I anticipate a 6-7 million year…not 8-10 million.
The AT&T store was out early, so we went to the APPLE store and were in and out in 5 minutes. Activated this morning (including transfer of number from Sprint) and wished I had purchased 2 of them. The interface is so much easier than a Blackberry or Treo. Perfect all-in-one device for light business and consumer use (once ringtones can be sampled in – bird noises are so 1G).
By the way since the ROKR was version 1, I knew that Apple would hit it right this time. They actually learn from their mistakes.
I think it is a joke that the company that was always at the forefront against “monopolist” Microsoft is launching a product that can only be used with one Telephone Company. Somewhere people in the management of Apple lost their vision and mind.
I have not seen a feature in iPhone that is worse compromising on market principles.
The control Steve Jobs wants on his products has already prevented Mac from mainstream, and now it will prevent iPhone becoming a mainstream product too!
Though I love iPhone, I can’t live without the many 3rd party softwares run on my htc TyTN, a Windows Mobile phone.
It’s amazing that so many people have such intimate knowledge of both the iPhone and AT&T’s supposed network deficiencies without actually having or using either one! And shame on those of you who try to instill guilt about all the starving people in the world while we sit here in America lining up to buy the lastest cellphone device. Am I in line? No…will I be? No! However, I’ll bet those of you that are so intent to crucify those who want this product have your own secret obsession with some product – cars, sports, cameras, books, whatever it is…the difference? No one is trying to crucify you because your preference is for a BMW over a Ford – that’s what makes this country interesting; we have choices. But for some reason everyone wants to put their smug opinion and judgments about this product – who hyped the iPhone….the media and us! Neither Apple or AT&T over-hyped this product release past normal advertising and news releases. And as far as the AT&T network – who’s hyped Verizon’s network? Verizon…do the research and you will find that AT&T has better and broader coverage than Verizon. It’s worse in your neighborhood? Wake up! It’s a radio signal…it’s different all over and every network is better than another somewhere. Are you really surprised that a call drops now and then (on any network)? If so…go back to landline! And as far as 3G is concerned – AT&T has a great 3G network…it was Appple’s decision to go with Edge on this release….had they opted for 3G capability in the iPhone no one would be talking smack about the “inferior” network that AT&T has. Bottom line – it’s a great product and an exciting pairing of two great companies….is it for everyone? No, but name something that is (besides breathing)!
I love phones. I have had the razor, nokia 8801, the motorola q, the sidekick, many samsung phones and ericson phones…
the iphone is UNBELIEVABLE! I love it! I would of paid 2x the price for it. call me crazy but I didn’t buy an ipod or music player because i hate carrying multiple things in my pocket. This thing is addicting and works better than i thought it would. if you have a mac already it is the simplest thing to set it up. The camera is great… Edge is fine. I hated the internet on the Q. even though it was broadband through verizon. it sucked to surf the web on it. this is like a mini computer in your hand. I have only had it for 12 or so hours and can’t get enough of it. traffic…you tube (by the way this is very cool)… music… camera… REAL internet that you can enjoy… phone (slim and feels perfect in your hand) What else can i say. I am in love with it. It would seem archaic to go back.
good luck
Wow, Wow, Wow, Fantastic!!!!
See my picutures of my experience.
http://homepage.mac.com/cre8vdirect/iphone/
Look for Spike Lee and Whoopy G.
Total joy. Worth every minute in line and every nickle it costs.
FANTASTIC! You can quote me!! HAA.
Carol Hannan, NYC
Well, you said it best. lack of common features like GPS and the decision to use AT&T’s sluggish broadband instead of a faster 3G network.”
I think that sums it up. $499-$599 for a neutered IPOD, a neutered web access tool, and lack of any GPS. Not worth the price.
I’m not usually a first version buyer, but the hype got to me this week and I stood in line and got one. I expected to like it with some “buts” and “if onlys”. No way! This thing far exceeds my expectations. It’s awesome!!!! I turned off the wi-fi to try out the EDGE web surfing. It’s noticeably slower, but very usable for reading CNN.com and such. Go get one!!!!!
I bought one yesterday and I agree with the initial evaluation. The device rocks but the service is so so. Also, I wish the was an apple care plan to go along with, oh well,
I guess I’ll have be EXTRA careful with it for the next two years!
I wrote this on my iPhone.
Adam
why dont you post a real article talking about how the launch of the iPhone has failed and how those who purchased have been waiting 17+ hours to simply activate it – when it was advertised as a 3 minute wait? seriously, report the truth – this product is NOT living up to its hype! next to nobody can use it!
I believe Apple is right on track in creating the iPhone. It’s filled with tools likely to take the phone into an every day communication device. Like many, I would be completely sold if there were a GPS feature, this is my favorite feature from my Motorola Krzr with Verizon VZ Navigator. I still can’t believe my tiny cell phone can plot a course through Los Angeles to the Santa Monica pier, without getting lost on the freeways through LA on the way. So maybe iPhone version 2 is for me.
Cool phone. I think people will be more disapointed with EDGE then they are aware. My current phone, also from ATT gets both EDGE and 3G. 3G is fine, but the EDGE is nearly useless. Of course, you can go wireless, but at that point you’re in a bookstore or coffee house and would be better off with a computer. Which is the next point: how much will people really want to browse on a tiny screen? The resolution is certainly higher than my current phone, but the image ain’t much bigger. It’s servicable in a squeeze, especially when you are using 3G, but I doubt it will replace a laptop for browsing. Add that you can’t opt out of the data services like you can with other smart phones, and that it does not suport many of business applications that are the mainstay of other smart phones, and you have a good case for disapointment. Still, cool phone. Maybe that’s enough.
Fizzle. Fantastic phone on a sluggish network means the phone won’t live up to it’s boxed features. And have you ever tried dialing on a touchscreen while in the car?
the i-phone will soon be a laggard due to its lack of 3G world phone standards. At&t’s broadband system is too old.You get the best wireless system with T-Mobile’s 3 G world standard.
Yes, I stood in line last night and got an iPhone. What did $600 buy me?
Trouble. My phone is not activated and I spent 3 hours on the phone with AT&T and Apple. And guess what? My phone still does not work. Yes, I’m excited to finally get a phone, but now I cannot use it. Is Steve Jobs and the AT&T CEO listening?
AT&T might be the worst network avaliable to consumers in the U.S. As an Avid Mac user for 15 years I highly anticipated the release of the iPhone and could have easily purchased one release night in San Diego… However why would I give up a near perfect Verizon network for dropped calls, slow internet (where avaliable), a phone that battery dies in about 4 hours, and a list that goes on and on. As a very happy Mac user and a happy verizon customer i will wait for for a Verizon edition or for a better AT&T network… some how i believe the first will happen… lets see what you got Qualcomm and LG!!!
A bit too big, awkward to put in pocket, expensive, slow download service, cool UI, not easy to text, most operations need both hands. I am going to stick to my Moto Q phone. thanks.
I just bought one yesterday (stood in line for 5 hours in DC)… it’s everything it was hyped to be. I have a few minor quibbles, but this phone is truly a breakthrough. I’m happy to throw my Treo in a drawer for this.
I was in line for two hours to get a IPhone yesterday. The AT&T store run out of phones. They obviously knew they only had a limited amount of phones and they just did not tell us. As far as I am concerned, this is no way to treat customers that are going to pay $ 600 for a phone. I am done with the I-Phone. Will never give money to companies who cannot handle a proper sale.
Got my iPhone home last night and was dialing within a few minutes. Does it live up to the hype-yes and more…What a slick, beautifully designed little gadget.
Looks great ! But Apple’s marriage with slower AT&T might provoke the customers to try Window’s Smart Phones (with Verizon and other carriers) which have faster download speeds.
Expensive for making a decision right now. Also I’m worried about its quality of its hardware and software.
So, I want to wait a couple of month for purchasing if I want it. Before that, I’ll take time to read users’ reviews and complains about ths system.
It’s always funny to hear the pundits wonder if an Apple product is going to be a success. Sounds like sour grapes to me! The iPhone, as most other Apple products is going to be a huge hit, for the same reason the iMac, the iPod and so many other Apple products have been so successful. They always meet, and usually exceed, people’s expectations for their functionality, elegance in design and ease of use. Any time I’ve bought anything from Apple, the joy consists in using it right out of the box, and discovering the jewels that lie within.
It’s beautiful and works great! Totally worth it. I say this as I read this article on it, and post my response on it…
Another example of ultra slick marketing hype and people looking to impress others by ownership of the latest fad gadget.
The device appears to represent a successful implementation of an all-in-one concept and Apple should be lauded for bringing it to market.
Not a bad marketing play by AT&T either.
Somewhere down the road, a few of the first units will end up in museums, the rest in landfills.
A sad reflection of the superficial nature of today’s society.
I am utterly disappointed with my iphone. Having spent 500 bucks and many hours waiting, I have yet to activate the damn phone, and it gets stuck on an apple screen when I try to open it up now. This piece of junk is going back to the store.
I’m so pissed off I started http://www.iphonerants.com so that people like me can rant!!
Last night the lines had died down, though the crowds within the Apple store had not, I had my chance to take the iPhone for a test drive. I was impressed. I think what the iPhone does best is actually the phone itself. It took a while to get use to the virtual keyboard, but I was reminded of how clumbsy my Palm Treo felt the first time I tried its keyboard. For a first generation product that’s destined to improve with age I think Apple has a hit on their hands. Analyst that reference the Newton or make claims that convergence doesn’t sell are missing the point. The market and Apple loyalist have been begging Apple to get into this mobile phone market–not the other way around. And frankly, Apple’s iPod has proven that convergence does sell. My household is on its third iPod. I use it as an address book, to store and share photos when travelling, watch movies on my weekly trips between Washington and New York and oh yeh–music! Apple’s story is not an overnight success story. It’s success has been building slowly, methodically for twenty years. It’s future is looking pretty sweet to me!
I think the biggest problem with the iPhone is that Apple “married” itself with a sub-par network. Anyone who knows anything about wireless, knows that the EDGE technology used by AT&T is not that fast. Early adopters of the iPhone will get their “fix”, but will soon realize that they just plopped down $500-$600 for an expensive iPod and crappy phone. More people would have bought the iPhone if Apple had made additional models to work with Verizon Wireless and other CDMA operators, and at a price where more people would have been willing to buy it.
The iPhone will set a new pace for mobile devices: (1) The iPhone can be viewed as an iPod++. The iPod has become a fashion statement as much as a killer music/video device. It will continue as such, and will lead in the convergence of phone and personal devices; (2) Despite the limits of the AT&T side of the offering, there is an all you can eat data (messaging/internet) component of the pricing plan – a long overdue component to phone plans that will change how we use phones; (3) This is a *nix phone, and the eventuality of being able to build and deploy applications on such a nice device is very enticing … Apple will work with its user base to make a consistent experience from phone to laptop to other household and business appliances.
Congratulations to Steve and team!
I was number 14 to get the Iphone yesterday in Manhattan. Was it worth the wait, yes for the excitement, NO for the device! I just put my phone up on ebay. It is slow, has MANY kinks, and I don’t feel comfortable with the touch pad. The accuracy is not correct. With all the hype, I was majorly disappointed.
I don’t think the iPhone will every live up to it’s hype; there is just no way. But I do believe it could revolutionize the smartphone market and start opening it up to new customers. I don’t know if it’s possible for Apple to take 70-80% market share since there already is a market (unlike the iPod) but it already has made a splash. Hopefully competitors will take note and start designing their products for consumers.
I went to the Appple Store in Willow Bend Mall in Plano, TX. There were only 350+ people in line in front of me but I got my iPhone. It’s everything and more I thought it would be.
Of all the articles I’ve read they’ve hardly mentioned the brilliant idea to activate the service over the Internet at home. It was easy and much faster than a store activation.
I think the iPhone will be a revolutionary technology, as it will start a wave of competitor products that will also improve upon the technology and reduce pricing. But most of all it will help improve our quality of life through cheaper and improved communicaton access
I have no idea what the thing does or why I would want to spend $600 on it. Must have something to do with sex I think.
No matter whether iPhone will be sizzle or fizzle, I feel that lining up for $500 gadgets says something about where our society is going. It’s sad to see people make a big deal out of a… well, just another phone.
I just bought one last night. Drove 65 miles to get it. I think it is fantastic! Worth every penny. Highly recommended.
Very unusual, the completely BIASED and often negative coverage of iPhone and AT&T by CNN – of course, a unit of Time-Warner.
Orders from hindquarters affecting journalistic integrity – we are used to this from Dewitt, but for the rest of CNN I am dissapointed.
This is the convergence device I’ve been wanting for years. The speed on the at&t network is slow, but nowhere near as slow as some reviewers have been saying.
The only bad thing was trying to buy one at an AT&T store. That was a maddening experience. When I finally gave up and went to an Apple store, I was much happier.
Also, I’m typing this on my iPhone. I have no complaints about the virtual keyboard. I’m nearly as fast on my iphone as I am on my blackberry keyboard.
i think the iphone is overrated. the iphone cant even get outlook email and download videos, songs or navigation over the air
Yes, although I have always been an Apple user I will not give up my wireless provider.
Bu limiting it iPhone to one server will really limit it’s usefulness and value.
The iPhone will only succeed if it becomes a phone for the masses, not just the die-hard Apple fans with $600 to fork out. If the prices were lowered, the phone was unlocked, and became customizable for any lifestyle (business, family, techie), then we’d truly see a revolutionary product.
Iphone is good for a couple of days. Until you notice you can’t even change the battery. No way to add memory. It’s just a first gen toy. I will like to have one until they improve the hardware and the network speed. I guess I just have to wait for the next gen of Iphone.
People need to get a grip. It’s just a phone. I walked by these fools waiting in line yesterday. If I could have turned a fire hose on them I would have. This is at the bottom of the list of things you need to wait in line for. The “frenzy” is as sad a statement that you’re likely to find about just how empty and shallow a consumerist culture we’ve become.
Wow! All around excellent! Even the small typing keys are fine once you get used to it. I even prefer the Google map to the GPS system. Rave! Rave! Rave!
I don’t know, I kinda think the iPhone will be a hit…..I don’t know if it was such a bright idea for Apple to announce the iPhone so early in January before launch, it gave alot of time for others to start copying the product. I’m sure copies will be released soon after launch of the iPhone.
But honestly, nothing is on the market right now that comes close to the ease of use of the iPhone. Anyone that is lucky enough to own one or see one has to admit it is a very easy to use and special little gadget. As Apple always does they will help push the industry the right way and make devices easy to use and much cooler. Where would the computer/electronic industry be today without Apple being the first and help push some of these technologies? From being the first to have a Personal computer, FIrst Operating System, first to have USB/Firewire, etc…. Apple is alot of the times the first and helps push the industry forward with new ideas and technolgies!
I was however mad when Apple started the iPod line and was going that direction I thought it was going to be a huge flop and we all know that I was wrong on that! So hopefully the iPhone will be a hit and make Apple stronger and raise my stock! I need the money…lol
ATT Exclusivity not good! I hate Cingular/ATT – whatever they’re calling themselve this month…looking forward to IPhone being offered to other carriers…until then I’ll wait!
All I hear from the most of the media is that: it doesn’t have a good battery, it can’t emaIl with a corporate security server, it’s slow with ATT’s Edge, the touch pad is lousy, NBC’s Merideth Viera’s ham fisted demo shut the thing off. It costs too much for a device that is just an iPhone and and a cell phone, What’s the big deal about that you say?—Wake up, smell the software. It’s a teeny tiny computer and it will rock you. The sky’s the limit with this company and your kids will hound you for one until you become helpless to deny them their very own iPhone. Like the one you bought for yourself.
no other device is fun and easy to use like the ipod. Everyone loves the ipod. No other smart phone is
fun and easy to use like the iphone.
Apple store in Rockaway mall had lots of Iphones. The employees were actually in the aisles herding customers in. I tried the phone and its hohum+ neat put not worth the asking price. I predict an Asian maker will come out with a better/cheaper/faster Aphone (Asian phone) and Steve Jobs will have to resort to flea markets and deep discounting to hit the target.
I adore this new phone and the concept. As a current owner of Blackberry perl, I would be tempted to buy this phone. However, this phone is not a 3G phone and the price tag is too high. Perhaps I will wait and see how the second generation of this product has to offer. I am sure this innovation will inspire others to comeup with similar and/or better products. Its good for the customers.
I just hacked manipulated the iPhone Bluetooth so it wirelessly tethers its AT&T EDGE Broadband Internet to my Dell laptop. Now I can be online high-speed with a full-featured laptop anywhere. Do that with your ordinary mobile phone! The naysayers lamented the closed proprietary MacOS on the iPhone. Ha! Give me another week and I’ll have an SSH (Secure Shell) client on it. This iPhone is awesome!
I have been using Apple products since the macintosh II desktop, apple will soon be a leader in a cross media platforms from publishing-print, audio , video, and the number one Record Label in 3 years through M&A to grow its ipod business!
I played with one yesterday. It’s an awesome device. When my plan(Verizon) expires in December I will have one.
Bought the phone, 5min in and out, went home to activate it, it’s now 12+ hrs, and 1 hr and counting on hold with AT&T to find out why it’s taking so long. I think AT&T is the achilles heal of the iPhone.
I hate the i-phone. I will be returning mine tomorrow. Waited in line for 17 hours. its a cool phone, but i like my verizon blackberry better
I got it home and there is possibly 1 bar of reception at my home and the phone drops my calls all of the time. The other features are impressive, but without the phone working I effectively have a $600 paperweight !
This phone is a waste of money. I am 15 years old and i am in love with phones but that is one phone that i would never get! The cost is not a problem but I dont understand why should I pay $600 for a phone that will go out of style in about 3 months? People see it as a “good deal” because you can listen to music, talk, and surf the web all in the same phone. STOP BEING LAZY!! If you buy a ipod and a phone that will be about $300-$400 unless your the type who wants to buy very expensive phone.
I bought my Iphone at 10pm from the 5th avenue Apple Store. Surrounded by this rockstar atmosphere I happily rushed home, just hoping not to be robbed. 12 hours later my mood has very much changed. So much so that I am blogging for the very first time, because I do not have a phone to yell at anyone. I am still waiting for Apple to activate my phone after it had cut off my original service. I am currently phoneless to call tech support and I need my phone for work.
WITH SO MANY BUYERS BEING BORN EVERY MINUTE, NO DOUBT THE NEW GADGET WILL BE SOLD TO MILLIONS OF THEM.
SEARCH ME FOR THE ANSWER, I WOULD NEVER BUY ONE. I USE A TELEPHONE TO TALL, A NOTEBOOK FOR E-MAIL, A RECEIVER AND SPEAKERS FOR MUSIC, I’M OLD FASHIONED, YOU KNOW.
I think that the iPhone appears to be without doubt, one of the greatest product developments in recent time. With Apples dedicated following and brand excellence within the consumer electronics industry, combined with an excellent marketing strategy aimed to build excitement throughout the nation – how could the unveiling be anything less than extraordinary? Enter AT&T.
$599 for a phone seems to get you out of the demographic of the young spender, and up into the college graduate/young professional – in other words, the people whose company likely choose what carrier they use, instead of them. By limiting themselves to AT&T, I believe Apple has strictly limited the marketshare that they can gain, because American corporations are largely not using AT&T – and will not use AT&T, meaning that the consumers who can afford the phone will not be able to purchase one.
Big Mistake Apple – I would love to try one, but it won’t happen, because companies are not going to take a step backwards in terms of service!!
iHave one in my hand. It is an amazing integrated device that is surprisingly more amazing than the months of hype and long lines at the store last night. I can already see this device is easily the best all-in-one personal assistant on the market. It is well worth the price tag and wait. I’m mesmerized.
ya know…some people just don’t get it. This is revolutionary. I got mine last night, signed on without a glitch and using it this morning just as advertised. Ya think this would happen with Zune? Vista? Xbox? not a chance. Apple is cool for many reasons: design, function, fun. But the real thing is the software and the hardward working together to make a product that just works, correctly, when you plug it in. No virus, no crashing, no hassle. Life’s to short.I feel sorry for the one’s that still don’t “get it”
The service provider AT&T will be the handicap for Apple.
Limiting the iPhone to one provider was not in Apple’s best interest. Im sure the people happy with AT&T and it’s service will enjoy the iPhone. That leaves many thousands who don’t like AT&T to wonder why Apple made the choice?
I myself would never buy a phone no matter who made it.
If I could not make calls on it because I was stuck with a certain wireless provider.
I think the touchpad will be a love hate thing. I myself still believe that people require feedback when typing.
This is why tablet laptop’s have not taken off.
Don’t get m wrong, the iPhone is a marvel, but will people be able to adapt?
I’ve bought one, and in less than 24 hours of ownership I’ve found that it does what was advertised. Wi-fi screams and the Edge network (when the signal is strong) works well. CNN’s page loads in about 10 seconds. I’m glad I have one!!
I tried to tell my wife about the iPhone when it was introduced in January and could not keep her attention. She had the same attitude when we went in the store Friday night, and after five minutes of playing with it she wanted one. That says it all.
I think it will revolutionize the cell phone industry. I would buy one, but it is not (yet) available in Canada.
I don’t think the phrase “all the hype” implying Apple hype really tells the story. Apple announced the product, worked toward finishing the product, and then on 6/29 delivered the product. They purchased a normal amount of TV ads for new computer product. Outside of their own events and their web site they have done minimal to “hype” this product. The anticipation by the potential buyers themselves (current Apple iPod customers and potential customers) is what drove the buildup in news. The uninspiring designs of the current crop of cell phones and the indifference-to-customer attitude of most phone companies is what drove the anticipation for something new, different and better. It was consumer anticipation not hype.
APPLE’S PAIRING W/CINGULAR WAS A HUGE MISTAKE. CHECK OUT “complaints.com”, and search “cingular”. THEY ARE “SINGULARLY”, THE WORST COMPANY i’VE ENCOUNTERED IN FIFTY YEARS – HORRIBLE ATTITUDE, MISLEADING ADVERTISING; AWFUL. THE IPHONE BECAME A TIFFINY BOX WITH A TURD INSIDE, WHEN IT CHOSE CINGULAR.
This phone is horrible. Look up the Sprint PPC-6700 (has been available for about 2 years now). It has all of the functionality of the iPhone, and Sprint provides UNLIMITED evdo downloads for only an extra 15 dollars a month. This is highway robbery if you ask me. Also, where is the slideout keyboard? You expect me to type a full e-mail on this thing?
JUST BOUGHT ONE LAST NIGHT 6/29/07 STILL CAN’T GET THE PHONE TO ACTIVATE. AT&T SAID COULD TAKE UP TO 4 HOURS FOR THE PHONE INFORMATION TO DOWNLOAD FROM APPLE. WELL IT’S 9:30 AM AND IT IS STILL NOT WORKING. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT IS OVERWELMED AND VERY RUDE. THERE IS NO HELP, AND I HAVE NO WORKING PHONE BECAUSE THEY SHUT OFF SERVICE TO MY OLD PHONE. THIS LAUNCH WAS WORSE THEN THE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA LAUNCH.
Amazing device. Even with all the other applications like web browser, email, video and muzak…the killer app is using it as a phone! Imagine that.
I actually am typing this response on my iPhone. Believe the hype, this thing is flat out amazing. You really have to mess around with one to appreciate it.
It will sizzle it’s the OS that drives the iphone. True beauty in computing. Maybe this move will get AT&T arse in a true 3G network mode.
The iPhone is definatly hot. It will do really well for Apple. In fact I am commenting from one right now. And I can say this is one of my best purchases ever!
Pretty disappointed with the phone. What is the most important thing when you want to call someone? Speed of dialing and reception. It takes multiple steps to call, doesn’t have voice-dialing, and reception wasn’t as clear as my previous phone. I am disappointed as I had expected Apple to think about what is most-important to the end-user. Sure, you can succeed on the bells and whistles (music player is great), but if you can’t succeed on the basics, you fail..Advice- Wait for the next version
iPhone will remain a novelty act, unlike iPod. Inhibitive price will come down soon. But the exclusive deal with the slowest data network, as well as the existence of dominant incumbent phone makers like Nokia and Motorola will cut the ‘Hype’rbolic party short soon.
Like the PS3, after the 1st wave of nuts buys it, it will sit on shelves as an overhyped, overpriced toy.
Worst yet, it’s got an inferior network, so i’ll be amazed if the buzz lasts more than a month or 2.
Cool looking, and works remarkably well. Set up was a breeze and the screen is crystal clear. Best $500 dollars i spent in awhile! Can’t wait for the next model
As a 25 year Apple user, I am never disappointed with their new products and the revolutionary way that they change the market. I was one of the crazies that stood in line yesterday to be a first, and I am thrilled that I did. It saves me from having to use 3rd party software that only works some of the time to sync my Blackberry with my Mac. (Not to mention the numerous other features). Apple has done it again. I love it.
Have you wondered why you can only use the iphone with At&T? It is the slowest network, and the iPhone battery is not replacable. They make you get a 2 year aggreement plan, and the battery only lasts two years. To get your battery fixed, you have to send the battery to apple. That’s the only way. They want you to buy an entirely new phone instead of taking the hassle to send it to apple. The iPhone is not too consumer-friendly….
I just ordered 2 iPhones online. I trust Apple completely to produce a device that non-nerds like me can use intuitively. I have owned Macs since 1988. Those who say that it is too expensive for a mobile phone are missing the point. It is a portable Mac computer with full internet access through Safari, a video iPod,capacity for consumer POP e-mail and messaging that just happens to have a phone feature. i can’t wait to get it!
i hope this thing falls flat on its face. this consumerism makes me sick to my stomach. i guess this is the next several hundred dollar item everyone is going to need to look cool.
gimme a break
Being a gadget loving person, I think the iPhone is just that…another gadget. The price is to high and it will get old fast, like everything else. Will I buy one? Not at $600 and probably not since it’s being carried by just one provider (not mine).
I bought on yesterday and it has been a nightmare to activate the service through AT&T even though I’ve been with Cingular for years.
Activation took about 2 minutes. very fast. no issues I was already an AT&T customer so I didn’t have to move a phone number from another carrier.
I have been a blackberry user for 7 years so it will take some time to get used to the new keyboard but the dictionary is good.
So far it is awesome. The graphics are wonderful. The software to do the touch screen is simply amazing. Ipod sounds great and the camera renders good colors.
Now I just need to get a better signal in my apartment which is just 4 blocks from CNN in NY. I don’t get a full signal in my apartment…t-mobile is my backup and I have not turned off their service.
Well i am not very happy with the decision for Apple to go with AT&T. AT&T having its hands full with Cingular and also its sluggish internet doesnt seem like a wise choice for Apple. I guess I will just wait and see how well this device really does. I am a Verzion Costumer so ill just wait for Apple to change networks after the realise how slow AT&T is.
The philosophical question is: Is iPhone a G1 iPhone or a G6 iPod? The prevailing attitude toward the answer to that question will determine whether or not the device has any legs beyond the hyped release. Will I own one? Yes. I’m waiting a few weeks because I hate crowds, I hate lines, and I’d rather have a pleasant experience buying it.
If you’re wondering, my attitude is that it is a highly functioning G6 iPod.
I think that the phone itself will do well. I just wish that Apple would have chosen a better carrier to partner with. I know that in my area AT&T has the worst service. So there is no way that I will be purchasing an iphone!
I have been, and remain an staunch Apple fan due to the corpration’s push towarsd inherent and ease-of-use as well as their conviction to address ergonomic details. I’ve own seevral Macs, from FatMACs (’85)-to-imAC24 (’07), along with many WIN machines (as we all are forced to use at times).
That said, I am under-impressed with the iPHONE with exception of its crisp display. Why? First, Apple’s “demo” showcases iPOD capability first — guess I do not want yet another iPOD since I own 80, 30, and nano GB models (so why get excited about 4/8 GB units?).
But what hits home is iPhone’s lack of GPS, non-replaceable battery, steep entry price (with no ATT insurance available), limited software stable, which in adddtion to a few other shortcomings, combine to spell “hype”.
I have been playing with T-mobile’s WING of late (as well as Blackberrys in ATT’s stable) and each seems to bring equivalent, if not more, to the cell phone user than iPHONE. I had my hands on a 4G unit — but at the end, it simply was not worth any (and all) the costs for what it has to offer. After all folks, it is a phone.
Cute that you can squeeze pictures about, and navigate the web, but do you think I really wish to read a significant maount of web content off a tiny screeen that costs as much as 13 to 17-inch laptops? Sorry, America has again overhuyped a hoola-hoop. Enjoy the toy for those that have it and MUST have it — by year’s end, it will be yet another XBOX 360 — everyone who wants one has one and other systems will show their superiori performance.
Had a chance to play with the phone yesterday. It’s light and the graphics are STUNNING. But $500-600 for a phone is too high and I’m not interested in changing my phone carrier to AT&T.
Instead, I’m hoping that many of the features (touch screen, great graphics, small footprint) get incorporated in the next gen iPod. We want that ASAP!
I went to 3 stores today to get my iPhone. I ended back up at an Apple Store. The employees were awsome, friendly, and handed out free coffee!
I got my 8 gig iPhone and I must say, I’m never going back to my Treo again.
The iPhone setup in iTunes took 2 minutes. I instantly had my email, I was browsing websites I browse on my home computer, all the while a song was playing in the background.
The keyboard typing is smart. People are worried it won’t work. I was skeptical as well. It works, it’s smart, it corrects your typos and adds common words you type to it’s own dictionary.
It’s sleek, elegant, and the easiest phone to use, ever. I called someone, put on hold, added a caller, merged and within seconds had a conference call
I’ve used Edge before, I’m used to that. But now a days there is wi-fi everywhere. That beats 3G! And it works.
It’s smooth, the screen is beautiful and crisp. Overall it’s a work of art.
I love my new iPhone. I won’t ever use another phone again. Thank you Steve Jobs, and everyone at Apple, Inc.
Great phone! Lot’s of features my “now old” moto razor did not have. It is a bit crazy At&t will not honor corporate discounts on the iphone plans!
An over the top Cabbage Patch Doll with the same or less future, an over rated collectors item in 6 months.
Apple has to much ego driven control at the top for American consumers to love it for ever.
You can buy better but you can’t pay more.
Wil
I am very skeptical that the business community will embrace the iPhone because the touchscreen email is just not going to be responsive enough for the vast majority of business users who are far more concerned with sending email than watching Survivor on their devices. And at $500 a pop, how much penetration can it get into the consumer market? It’s going to be a bust.
Phone is great but the network is not what I would have chosen to support it. Might as well use a dial-up modem…not a good fit for such an impressive device.
Initial iPhone price and ATT service costs will limit sales to much lower than projected by Apple; version 2 will be priced better, and faster broadband access eventually will boost sales. Meanwhile, Blackberry innovates.
On a whim I stopped by the Apple Store and played with iPhone. It is clearly the most cool, easy, fun, sexy device I have ever encountered. I did not here or see one person (out of 100 or so) that did not LOVE this device. The experience in your hand is outstanding. It will be interesting to hear what people say after 2 weeks or so.
The big release of Iphone is nothing more than a win of Marketing and Design. Absolutely nothing more. For any other maker and any other market it would be impossible to do such a big release for a phone that has only a 2MP camera, no Wi-Fi, no 3G and that is just for starters. So style over substance and marketing over value. Every so often it works.
If you look back into the history of Apple, they rise and fall in spectacular fashion to the point of bankruptcy and world domination within a few years of each other. I can’t help thinking history will be repeating itself in the not-so-distant future while the current world domination evaporates away.
While the iphone certainly looks the part, the majority of consumers do not want or need the array of functions provided by a single device and are usually over complex in their operating sytle. I do not think the audience for such an expensive gadget is very large at all. Perhaps 10% that of the ipod? The ipod was a huge success because it was good at doing one thing really well. I fancy the iphone may be just ‘ok’ at each of its functions. And then there’s reliability…if there isn’t some kind of major hardware or software fault found in the next six months, i’ll eat my hat. (A specially made chocolate hat that is)
I think my iphone is awesome, so far. Signing up for service took mere minutes. AT&T was not my wireless provider until now, I have to say that I was impressed by the rate plans they offered (unlimited web and emails) for a great price. I have not had a chance to mess with it that much, but where are the games? Did I miss the games? And I am still wondering about the wi-fi, and what options I have when taking the phone overseas. What happens if I am in a free wi-fi hot spot in Europe, will that still cost me an arm and a leg from AT&T? Swapping SIM cards is the norm in Europe; can I do that while I am traveling with the iphone? Plus, I fear I am expecting too much from the mobile web-browsing, which may be unfortunately the main reason I bought the device. I am bracing myself for a very slow connection, but cross my fingers for a surprise. Got to get back to the marathon music download onto my iphone, gotta flip through the album art with my finger!
Apple’s iPhone will turn out to be at least as a bestseller as the sleek iPods more than four years ago.
After I saved my money for several months to by the long awaited iphone, and determined to spend $600 there was a serious draw back that seriously prevented me to buy it after I lined up for about twenty min in line at the pentagon city mall in VA which I was gritted by exited apple nerd squad members by weaseling to us upon entrance and quickly cornered us inside to just go to the cash register and purchase the creation, but I chose to get help for the demonstration, but I was really disappointed by the findings I discovered first of all I cannot play youtube directly from the website, only the selected few thousand clips, I was really surprised and I demanded explanation from the apple member but he doesn’t really know about it, so I went to CNN web and try to play current video news clip and I got a massage saying it doesn’t play the format and I need a plug-in which is understandable. So I still demanded explanation and I was directed to talk to one of the senior nerd squad members and I was told it only play quick time format, so I went to the QuickTime web and try to play the many movie trailers that apple has in quicktime format but it wont play it at all, 3.. there is no text cut and past capability at all, 4.. I was using the wifi and goggle map and try to get direction it was quick to view the first screen but when I was scrolling to view the rest of the direction it freezes a little and keep scrolling to view the rest of the direction twice it was really frizzing, to your surprise it frizzes on the first page on the goggle direct advertisement that apple lunched, you can closely notice on the top side of the screen. 5… The acslometer doesn’t work when you play movies.
So in general the creation do amazing things and my heart is telling me to by it but my conscious is telling me to wait and see what they will do about this maters that I picked up, but I was really sorry for those fanatics who was cornered and directed to buy it with out even try it, I just want to know what they will say when they find out they cant play their favorite uploaded buddy youtube clips and some of the serious finding I hade.
Please fill free to correct my spelling and grammar to make it understandable thank you
I love my iPhone its the best device I have owned so far and it exceeds my expectations. So far it does everything I want and need very well. The 3g is not a issue and everything just works. All cell phones shouldaork this well.
I believe the Iphone will be the what macintosh was when it was first introduced in 1984. I believe this is just a milestone for what is yet to come with Apple. Stay tuned!!
I can’t really tell you what I think of my new iPhone, because AT&T hasn’t activated it yet. As soon as I got home (after waiting half the day in line at the Apple store), I tried to activate my iPhone, but I got a message that said: “Your activation requires additional time to complete. You will receive an email confirmation once your activation is complete.” Well, more than THREE HOURS LATER, I did get an e-mail, only it said that my current rate plan was incompatible with the iPhone. When I called the activation hotline, I was told that the department that changes rate plans was closed.
Apple, I love you. AT&T, you’re ten pounds of diarrhea in a five-pound bag.
Well, I’ve purchased the phone and in the 6 hours I’ve had it, I have to say it’s amazinly nice. It’s elegant and clean…and the functionality is incredible. I’ll buy more.
I am completely sick of hearing about this stupid phone…It’s an overhyped, overpriced gimmick only worth buying for Macheads…They have been using technology better than this for years in Asia…Oh for those who buy it, good luck keeping a touch screen clean and unscratched…
It’s out now! I hope we dont have to hear about it anymore…There are things far more important in the world than phones!
The slow internet speed seems to be the #1 hang-up on this device. (I’m GLAD that there is no GPS. I like not being locatable at any given time). But if iPhone meets expectations or exceeds them, trust ATT will step up there efforts and meet the need for speed. Presto! iPhone shortcoming…gone!
The real deal, again, like Pixar and iPod…Steve Jobs the genius doesn’t let anything—anything—out of the bag until he is personally satisfied with it. What’s not to appreciate about the iPhone, except the price, which like iPod will stay up there. And, like the iPod, will spawn a jealous industry while winning hearts and users. Too bad, Verizon—great network but those archaic phones! We could have had it all.
I honestly think the iPhone will be a bust with many people. Main reason for my thinking is due to the fact that it’s just a fancier version of the iPod, meaning a complete one-piece version. If the battery needs replacing (like the iPod), how will the iPhone’s owner make phone calls? They may be out of a cellphone for days or even weeks. I’m not saying the iPhone is bad. It actually looks very nice. But it’s not something I would spend $499 or even $599 on. I have enough money to buy an iPhone, PS3, and a Wii. I won’t buy it because in my mind, none of those gadgets are worth that much money, and that includes the new iPhone.
I was the third person to buy mine at the Newport Beach, California store. It does not live up to the hype. It far exceeds the hype. It is magical…truly magical. i would have paid twice or three times as much for it. Go Apple!!! Go Steve Jobs!!! Go iPhone!!!
awesome ! breathtaking screen. amazing internet and youtube, but can’t really hear someone talking while im on the phone . speakerphone is weak too. few bugs while watching youtube, goes black and back to home screen, experience same thing in google maps.
The biggest let down is the speakerphone. It is a phone and thats how i talk to people. I can’t talk to people if i have to say what did you say? I hope this can be fixed.
I just purchased the highly anticipated iPhone. I’m in complete amazment by it. I’m very happy with my purchase. It’s underpriced I think. It’s a complete winner. Best phone in the history of phones. I love APPLE.
Over-hyped like crazy. Too expensive and lack 3rd party support to make them useful. Total waste of time, money, and effort for everyone who has been camping out this week.
A glass surface? What happens when I accidentally drop an iPhone from waist height onto pavement? My Treo has taken several such falls without a problem.
initially the iPhone will sizzle, then the newness will wear off. I’m hoping for a price reduction by the end of this year and maybe purchase one in March of 2008.
I’m not walking around and probaly dropping a $600 1st gen phone. I kissed the ground the day I got out of my AT+T contract, you couldn’t pay me to go back. I have 4 broken Ipods in my drawer. Not rounding up with the herd.
I got one at the SOHO store, but still have not been able to use it. AT&T has dropped the ball. It’s been over 6 hours since I attempted to activate it. So far it is a six hundred dollar brick.
Thanks Steve Jobs. Next time try T-Mobile.
this phone is absolutely incredible. It is incredibly easy to use. In fact I am writing this on one now. I love it. The screen is sharp and clear and all the functions are easy as pie to use. In fact I can write with two thumbs on the keyboard without issue.
The iPhone seems great but I won’t get one until they work out all the bugs. Plus it’s WAY over-priced like most of Apple’s products. I love Mac but they’re stuff still overpriced. I hope they come out with a much cheaper version of the iPhone so more people can afford it. $500 AFTER signing two years of your life away plus another $100 for service is in all honesty ridiculous.
I’m sure the device will be great, but ATT and Apple have blown the launch. At the ATT store where I and many others waited, only 20 units were available (and only 8 of the 8GB models). The mood quickly turned from joyful celebration to sullen mob. I haven’t spent a dime yet and I already feel ripped off.
I think that all the hype over a phone/mp3 player is not worthwhile. It will almost certainly have glitches that will have to be worked out, and I am just not the kind of person to sink that kind of money on a product like Vista, iPhone, PS3, etc without at least one major revision.
WOOOO HOOO THE IPHONE IS AMAZING I LOVE IT WOOOOOO HOOOOOO, IT’S THE GREATEST INVENTION SINCE THE PHONE ITSELF… IT’S A LAPTOP IN A PHONE CHECK YOUR STOCKS, SEND AND RECIEVE EMAILS GO ANYWHERE DO ANYTHING I WAITED 12 HOURS IN LINE FOR THIS…… WOOOO HOOOO WORTH EVERY MINUTE.
Think about this?
Its already a hit. Did we have the same polls, articles, blog, media coverage with any other phone?
Apple Hype? What hype? They introduced it in January and never showed it again until 2 weeks ago with 4 commercials. The media and the competitors where the one hyping it. I’m willing to be that negative articles out numbered the positive one by 10 to 1. Check it out.
So far, so good. Replacing my top of the line windows smart phone with the iphone. Great features that make it extremely user friendly…….they’ve put alot of thought into what people really want…….not alot of useless features that I never use found commonly in the windows models. The finger-touch keypad is hard to get used to, but I think will actually be easier to use than those “slide-out” keyboards for text messaging. So far, my only complaint is that the memory for iPod tunes is only 7+ gigs…..I can only load about 1/5 of my mp3 files that I currently have on my iPod. I’m sure that the first upgrades will have alot more disc space. The real test will be whether or not they work after the next hurricane.
I am typing this from my iPhone, and I can’t believe how easy the keypad is. I had the Samsung Blackjack, and I was always hitting the wrong letter for a SMS message or an email. It was really annoying. I believe Apple has made a huge break through with the iPhone. The touch screen the first of its kind — now maybe Motorola and Samsung will follow. The fact that you can take the iPhone to a Starbucks or anywhere with a Wifi connection is amazing. Finally you can get FULL web pages on a phone and not just a jumbled mess of something on a normal cell phone. I believe Apple has created something worth the price. All you have to decide is how large a HD you want and how many SMS and minutes you want in your plan.
The whole idea of the iPhone is awesome, but had many drawbacks like a minimal plan of $59.99 a month, you cant download music straight to it, you have to have and itunes account or purchase one, in order to own the iPhone. Dont get me wrong, Its sweet device in many many ways. Id love to own one myself. It just seems to come with too hefty of a price tag to really be worth it.
I’m sure it will be a huge success for Apple Inc however I will wait for any bugs to be worked out before spending that much for a phone. It is certainly the Lexus of devices and the makers deserve applause for continuing to be innovative in the current era of copycat electronics, entertainment and such. Apple continues to impress upon society it’s creativeness.
It’s a lot of money to spend on a phone that will be outdated as new high-speed services evolve. How many people will be willing to dump their $500 iPhone in a year or two for a new one? Not me.
Whatever flaws the iPhone may have, keep in mind this is the first one. Compare the first iPod with what is out now.
The potential is mind boggling.
I love my iPhone!! My upstairs neghbor had a ’super’ theme party, and well needless to say i walked in with my iPhone and was a total hit, thank goodness because my costume was terrible! It does everything as advertised and more. The EDGE network was as slow as everyone thought it would be, buyother than that it is phonomenal I just wish myfriends had one so iwould actually get to play with mine!!!
The iPhone surpasses the hype. Apple has re-defined innovation. The technologies used in the iPhone will forge a new era in electronics. I can’t wait to see what Steve has planned next.
Got to have it but willing to wait for Version 2.0. The iPhone is so cutting edge it will set a new standard for the competition in the Internet Appliance and Portable Audio/Video device market.
Gotta Love Apple
I bought one. It was as good as I had hoped. The browser is amazing the OS is very responsive. And everything is so easy to use. Love the fact that it integrates with my address book on my laptop. It’s beautiful the hardware and the software. Everything is seamless and streamlined. Truly a marvelous technological masterpiece
It’s a great device, but too many people are buying an item that very soon will be twice as better and much cheaper. Why they went wth the worse Cingular is beyond me!
I am fortunate to have an IPhone on the first day of its release. I got it hooked up and working within the first two hours after I had bought it. It is not only beautiful but does everything that I expected it to do with no compromise in its quality.
If you can afford it, I highly recommend that you go ahead and buy it.
Good Luck!
as I type this on my new iphone, i can assure readers that it most definately is worth every penny!! Email, Google Maps, Safari & especially YouTube sizzle overly my home wi-fi network. I just watched the videos for “Hey Jude”, “Icky Thump” & the brilliant opening of Tenacious D & the Pick of Destiny. My 17-month-old daughter is hypnotized by the gorgeous screen.
As I sit here and type this review on my new iPhone, I can honestly say it was well worth the wait. This device meets all the hype and still has some extra wows to go around. The only con I’ve noticed so far, is that the edge network is quite slower than I would have liked. Everything else, including the cost is great.
interesting… but way over-hyped… i use a Blackberry… love the Internet and eMail access but what I really need is great coverage and phone quality… if iPhone sucks in these areas… bad news ahead.
No 3G? No GPS? No good. It’s not up to international standards and so it will soon be remembered as a passing fad.
People will love this product solely because it was made by the almighty Apple despite the fact that it’s missing some important features that even the cheapest of phones have these days. Basically, the iPhone is a crippled product. It never ceases to amaze me how much people will spend on Apple products simply because they’re made by Apple.
It will fizzle. Should have went with Sprint. When the new is gone… the only thing to keep it up is internet speed; AT&T can not compete. In addition, AT&T will continue it’s poor customer stisfaction and it’s ruthless double billing and scaming the consumer of money.
The iPod was a success because of its high storage capacity, ease of use and sleek design. It was also treading fairly barren ground. The iPhone has received much of the same criticism (too expensive, who needs those functions, it’s too fragile) BUT with a major difference – there are dozens of technologically superior products already on the market. Fanboys may have been giving interviews as they stood in line, but for most folks, even Apple users, the unveiling was met with an unstifled, “Meh.”
I have to admit that I succumbed to the hype. I purchased an iPhone today. Being an Apple geek already (about $5,000 worth of Apple equipment at home), I guess it was just a natural progression. I do hve to say that so far I am not dissappointed. The phone is just as innovative if not more innovative than I would have even expected. It truly is a joy, in a world of having to settle for mediocre, that we have come to know from technology thus far. Again my hat is off to Apple for giving us another innovative product.
I went into our local apple store – there was a line of about 150 outside. Went to dinner, came back – walked right up to the front of the display played with the iphone and could of bought it on the spot – no wait no crowd. Tried the internet, music player ect – was very cool but did not buy. My phone works fine and so does my ipod, besides isn’t it a bit scary to have ALL THAT STUFF on one thing!
Will the iPhone live up to it’s name? Certainly not. Currently I’m using a Nokia N95 and Apple started to convince me that it would make my Nokia obsolete. So my N95 does Dvd vienn, gps and so many other function that the iphone’s missing. Simply not sold. Great marketing but not a great multimedia computer. If I want flash, I’ll get the iPhone. If I want a multimedia device all in one, I’m sticking to my Nokia. T
I feel that all of the Apple products are awesome! They are just #1 and phenomenal at what they do! I’ve been a mac user for 2 1/2 years now and I think the iPhone will SIZZLE!!!! I love mac and will never go back!
What is the fuss all about?
Cell Phone? – Got one
Maps? – Nav system in the car
Music? – Covered at home, car & desk
Web surfing? – Got a desktop/laptop
Photo? – Family picture in the wallet
And this is supposed to be a “Jesus Phone”? – Give me a break!
The phone is actually quite overrated. Sony Ericsson has way better phones with advanced audio/video features and has sold more walkman phones than iPods in Europe. Their newest phone is 5 mega-pixels. Handle THAT, iPhoney
We love it!
The iPhone is faster and easier to use than the critics suggested and it is as fun as its supporters said it would be.
FIZZLE!
I bought three 8GB iPhones for myself and two of my employees, BUT – ATT and Apple won’t let me use the phones on my Buisness account. I called ATT and was told that I would have to switch my 24 line business account to an individual plan… I see a big problem here. I’ll be returning the phone and I’ll move my $2200 per month phone bill over to Verizon
This phone is a piece of junk, the power switch doesn’t work, half the screens, i can barely read. what a waste of money. i’ll go back to my regular ipod and save a few hundred. Plus at&t service sucks bigtime. wait until you try to get an operator. India, here we come!
Two megapixel camera, no office support, no keys, no access to 3rd party applications…..WOW, this is a TELEPHONE people…not a SMARTPHONE.
Check out Nokia N95…now that’s a mobile entertainment device.
If the iphone is so go, why cann’t you download music directly to it? like you can through vcast. Why can’t you watch live tv? like you can on mobile tv by vcast. why can’t you have GPS navigation with turn by turn directions like you can on vznavigator. Why is is internet access so slow? as opposed to EVDO from Verizon Wireless. Why is it $200.00 to $300.00 more than other cell phones and dosen’t even have all the capablities of other phones. for all the hype and expense, this is a very limited device compared to the competition.
This is so cool. Still learning and playing. Everything it’s cracked up to be and more. Instant phone number assigned, and I was making calls within minutes of plugging it in. Photos very cool – music easy to load. Couldn’t be happier!!!
I don’t think it will be that successful. People are flocking to buy the iPhone now, but will be disappointed later. Its image is way over-exaggerated. Apple always sells inferior products at high prices. The fact that they’re using AT&T as its only service provider doesn’t help the iPhone’s chance of success either. Apple needs to focus on making the ipod and their headphones more durable.
iWork for at&t. I know at my store we were just as excited about this phone as were the 30 some people that were outside of our store waiting to get in this evening. I live in a small city in North Carolina so to have 30 people waiting was great. The iPhone is the wave of the future in cell phones and I’m glad that 2 power houses got together and produced this thing. It is completely iAmazing.
I think with Apple’s reputation, the iphone will be a phenomenon. When I seen the commercial, I said to myself, I am definitely going to have to get my hands on one. I don’t have a cellular contract, but I would be willing to get one, just to buy this phone. Its about time that they started using marketing strategies similar to the hype marketing style of the video game systems. Just enough information to keep you hanging and long enough to drive you nuts until you get one.
I was able to see the phone in person this evening at a rural AT&T store that still had iPhones available…in the 10 minutes I had to play with it, I can only say one thing…”wow”. As soon as my Verizon contract expires, I’m switching.
I think people are putting too much emphasis on the wed portion of the phone – Forget about web surfing, it’s the coolest iPod out there. BlackBerries operate on the Edge network and function great for email and phone calls. So I don’t see a problem.
I have a BlackJack that operates on 3G. The battery life is terrible and most if the time I can’t get a 3G signal and I have no problem with email…
So once people play with the iPhone I think the reviews will be even better. iPhone will be a huge success for both companies.
Most people dont even understand how far ahead of time this device is.
I keep hearing… $600 for a phone?
Well, if it hasnt already been made clear this is 3+ devices in one, with features that tie all three together to allow even more things that NO other device can do yet.
Ive been thinking about buying an iPod latelty. With screens they start at $149 – $249 (more if you need more capactiy).. but $200 is around what I would spend for an iPod.
The phone part is prolly worth $200… decent feature packed phones sell for double that… $200-$400
And as a device for internet/web and email on the go (I need this), I would easily pay $200 for.
Add all this up and I would be spending $600-$800… easy.
But I can get all three in one sleek device for only $600? that is a scream of a deal.
Honestly, anyone who thinks the iPhone is JUST a phone for $600, doesnt have the capacity to need such a brilliant device.
I personally am fully satisfied by Google Maps over a GPS feature. (Besides GPS will be an add-on, so people that want that will still get it with iPhone)
iPhone will not fizzle. All the companies will clone it in about 2 years. Even if Apple doesnt bank on the iPhone, as usual, they will be the pioneer.
Honestly there are a lot of problems with the phone
1st and most important it’s all touch screen
2nd No corporate email I guess this phone is for kids…..
3rd what do you mean no removable battery are you telling me if it’s defective I gotta send it back and be without a phone it costs $600 bucks
I know 100% it will go back just as fast as it left the store
I have the sidekick 3 and love the keyboard i was disapointed with the keyboard on the IPhone I think the ipod part of it was amazing tho.
I think the Iphone will be a huge hit. It is very easy to use and does so many different things, that you only need 1 item instead of a phone, a Ipod, a camera.
Was very interested, was going to buy one tonight but at the Apple web site, it seems you need to use only ATT as a provider. I expected I could slide my SIM card out of my current phone, slide it in my new iphone and use my current provider. There is no way I am going to pay to early cancel and start again… they blew it on this aspect to me…
The iPhone will help introduce the masses to the benefits of using a convergence device, but the hype around the iPhone is just that, hype and nothing more. The functions of the iPhone are not revolutionary, as they have been available on other devices for the past two years. Hopefully the iPhone will help ween Americans off the free cell phone trend which has been helping to keep American wireless networks 5 years behind that of Europe and Asia. If the iPhone wasn’t so locked in, it would be a great alternative to other phones, but having it carrier locked and software locked, limits and restricts the user;in turn really making the phone a ball(apple) and chain(AT&T).
I really don’t see the hype, The iPhone seems to be nothing more than the same thing in a fancy box. Sure it’s got a great interface, but it is not changing the industry where it needs change the most: the service providers.
I fiddled with the iPhone in an AT&t store just after 6pm. It was really cool, and the touch screen and keyboard were much easier to use than I expected. Definitely worth the hype.
Fizzle. You simply can’t come out with such an expensive, although interesting cell phone for $500 with a calling plan starting at $60 and expect to compete with Nokia N95, LG Prada for much less, unlocked and just as nice if not nicer. Good luck Apple.
Why don’t you people get a life. Guess what , you will be able to buy this crap at half the price in a month or 2. Even then the service will be terrible, so enjoy your new toy for now.
In the short terms (first six months) the iPhone sales will fall below projections. This will be due to the high price, lack of 3G, lack of upgradable memory, no ability to load 3rd party applications, non-interchangable battery, lack of search in the address book, no integration with Ooutlook and no push e-mail. However, I think it is inevitable that future iterations will resolve some of these issues making the phone reasonably successful in the long term.
The Iphone is a porche with no gas. Great device but running on a 2G network is absurd. The slow data speeds will drive customers crazy and will be a common complaint. Apple would have been better off if they could have worked it out with their first choice, Verizon, and its EVDO broadband network.
This product will sizzle because it addresses a need (phone, PDA, MP3 and camera in one simple package)better than anyone else—and it does so with style.
I think very much like all tech gadgets, smart user will wait until the technology improves.
While the iPhone has some great features, it doesn’t completely replace my 80GB video iPod, it doesn’t have GPS, its battery can’t be replaced by the user- and what if you want to switch out your SIM card from yur old phone?? OOPS! …Looks like you’ll be entering all that contact information by hand.
…I’m going to wait until it includes more features, has more disk space, and has been proven reliable.
Personally I refuse to buy any phone no matter how wonderful if they make an exclusive deal with one carrier. No way am I going to pay cancellation fees just to get a gadget.
I wonder why people even like the chunky, heavy and ugly iPod, let alone a phone that sells for 500$!
Well, how about this. Plug the iPhone into your car docking station. Select a tune on it from your stearing wheel controls, flick on a movie for the kids in the back seat and when a call comes in have it play over the Bose speakers via a blue tooth connection.
These killer features are probably only 9 months away for the 2009 cars of major manufacturers.
Talk about a killer aps for the iPhone.
Although I can understand wanting to be “the first” to own an exciting, new product, I cannot understand waiting in a line-up for 100 hours to buy it. Would it not have been more meaningful to have had hundreds of people putting in a 100 hours each volunteering for a favorite charity or other humanitarian effort?
iPhone is the biggest mistake in electronic history. $599 should be enough to buy an iPhone with GPS support + 60 gb harddrive. I can’t imagine anyone would use it for viewing pictures – I mean come’on… who does that?! Have ppl forget what “phone” means? iPhone should have been renamed to iDevice.
Waiting for the second generation iphone, hopefully they will switch to 3G, increase battery strength and fix other quirks.
This is so Stupid….. people lining up for something that i bought 3 years ago… sony ericsson p910.. does everything the Iphone does. I really dont understand why so much hype….
Sizzle….History will show that this is the first of several generations of iphones that ultimately have a huge impact on cell phone mfgs. and carriers, long needed. The current devices are stodgy, slow and lack the true multi-functionality the technology is capable of.
The iphone will force ATT to improve its infrastructure….long needed. It will push Verizon to moderate it’s dictating to suppliers what features to bring to market.
Apple will have another huge hit on its hands….well done!
I watched the keynote on the phone presentation, and I think the product is amazing, I don’t know if Apple will sell as many as Jobs is predicting, but the take-off is going to be huge. I have the itch, but I’m going to wait until the next version, which knowing Apple, is just around the corner.
iPhone will be a hit–no doubt. But it’s real impact will be over the next 6-12 months as the early adaptors show their friends, family, co-workers etc. how this thing can be really useful in everyday work and play. ie: checking your email, some online news, movie showtimes, stock prices… from anywhere you have (AT&T) coverage. And yeah, you can watch a movie or the latest Office episode on that flight/bus/subway ride. The iPod has become a practical tool.
There is no doubt in my mind that the iPhone will be a tremendous success. Apple simply has the talent and the vision to succeed where other visionless companies talk about success as if it was their right just by virtue of their having shown up. apple doesn’t get enough credit in the media for the innovation.
Only the hardcore Mac users, rich folks, and tech gadget freaks will make the plunge. With carrier costs and everything you’re talking $2000+ to operate this device for 2 years. You might as well buy a new macbook pro. It’s going to fizzzle.
I think Apple has come a long way from when I remember the old ’80’s computers; the Apple 2Plus that took up the entire room, but I’m not thrilled that the IPhone will only be used on the AT&T network. I have Verizon and even though I would love to have an IPhone, I won’t change networks.
The hype and sleek Apple design will help the iPhone through launch, but the long-term success will depend on how quickly Apple will be able to improve on lack of features that are standard on many phones and other PDAs. The commercials show quick page loads and impressive features that might not work as well as they appear. Just remember – consumers are willing to try anything once, but your product must live up to your claims and expectations if you expect it to last.
I think it will be popular at first, but not many people are willing to pay 500 dollars for a phone, and then 50 dollars a month on top of their regular plan for data.
AT&T’s network has a reputation of poor data service, so it’s reasonable to speculate whether the network will be impacted by the major increase in data traveling across the network due to the iPhone. The real question for AT&T now is have they appropriately planned from a capacity standpoint what affect the iPhone will have, and do they have the correct methods in place to foresee if there will be a problem that will lead to a potential service outages?
This is important especially given the recent Blackberry outage where an unforeseen software problem led to an outage that affected 8 million users. It’s clear the demand for the iPhone is huge and will remain that way at least in the near future, so the potential is high for a repeat of the Blackberry scenario given AT&T’s already notoriously spotty network.
Nobody’s noticed that even the most vocal critics have sworn allegiance to the second or third version. By their standards, a year from now, it would not make sense to buy anything else.
I started on the 512 KE Macintosh, later bought the original iMac, and I certainly plan on getting the first iPhone. Verizon forces me to endure and pay for a one minute long introduction each time I remotely pick up voicemail messages, and it costs me more per month for less features and no rollover.
Getting the iPhone v1 is a no brainer, plus we’ll be getting software and firmware upgrades constantly.
I think the iPhone is great. Not so much for what it is and what it does, but really about what it represents. When so many companies are focused just on the bottom line and creating products that are just ho-hum, Apple is showing everyone that America has the most innovative, creative and ambitious designers, employees, thinkers and dreamers in the world. It’s an example of what can be done if we all dream a little more, be persistent and really work hard at it. Now, if we could get as excited about solving global warming, that would be the biggest news ever. Let’s create the iCarbon. A product that could measure your daily carbon footprint.
I would be in line with everyone else if this phone supported Corp. email. I can’t figure out why they decided against integrating that functionality. For now, my Blackberry stays in my pocket
Finally, Steve Jobs gets his come-uppance, after John Scully (Pepsi President, who Steve hired to run his company in 1984 at the intro of MacIntosh Computer) got the Board of Directors at Apple to fire Steve from his company.
I could not be happier!
And, Yes, I will buy an iphone.
BG, St. Augustine Florida
Features I don’t need in a phone include web browsing, email, music player, text messaging and camera. What I need in a phone is an easy interface to retrieve numbers and excellent coverage. But I guess it’s no longer about the phone. I think I’d be better off buying $600 of Apple stock rather than the iPhone.
Any cellular that only works through a specific network like ATT or Sprint is useless. GSM unlocked phones are the way to go.
Sure it looks pretty. However, the iPhone is mostly hype. First, it is not the first touch screen cell phone. Second, it does not run on the 3G network. Believe me, 3G is broadband on a cell phone. I connect my AT&T 8525 Windows Mobile Smart Phone to my laptop and I get a high speed connection.
I would wait for the iPhone 2. It will have 3G connectivity.
There is an article on the internet that lists 10 items that the iPhone is missing.
Anyone heard of High Tech Computer Corporation? We they have been making PDAs and Smartphones for companies like HP and Cingular/AT&T. They have decided to market their phones under their own brand.
Visit HTC at http://www.htc.com
I think Apple products are sleek and well-designed but I worry about the one carrier option – I hope Apple finds a way to have Verizon phones not just AT&T which isn’t as good in NYC
There is one big piece of information missing from all the iPhone/AT&T articles. Most people are unaware that you can ONLY get the iPhone if you sign a NEW 2 year agreement with AT&T. That means that if you are an existing customer who is say, 1 year into a 2 year contract, you literally CANNOT get the iPhone because you are not eligible for an upgrade. You will have to actually pay the early termination fee for your existing contract (175 I think) and then sign up for a NEW contract. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of….and I think there are going to be a lot of really upset people out there who spend a day waiting in line for this thing only to be told that they aren’t eligible for an upgrade. Just more *wonderful* AT&T/Cingular customer service for ya!
Not interested. Doesn’t have the features I want in a phone, it’s best feature is the web browser, which has been apparently been a bust due to the slow edge network.
Doesn’t have GPS built in? What were they thinking? Worst of all it’s AT&T, the company with the worst customer service on the planet.
I’ll stick with my LG ENV thank you, Nice keyborad, GPS voice nav built in, Removable memory, Music player that does not require ITunes, 2.0 meg camera, and alot cheaper than the Iphone.
I already posted this in the “X things missing” thread, but feel so strongly about the iPhone, I had to put in my two cents here as well. I am a Cingular, whoops, AT&T customer (which I was originally), whose contract is coming up, yet I would not spend my hard-earned cash to ‘beta test’ the iPhone. Why? Because above all else, I need my phone to function, and I have little faith that it will be reliable. I have purchased an imac, ibook, and two ipods (after the initial items reliably broke the days their warranties ended…); I’m in publishing and have been forced to use macs, but am thinking of switching to PCs after feeling like I’m just not getting good bang for my buck. Don’t buy into the hype–the phone looks sharp, but underneath the “emperor’s new clothes” it’s inadequate–a small ipod, low-quality camera and so forth. I ain’t buying.

From what I’ve read, the Iphone will be running on AT&T’s Edge 2G network which is slow as hell so why waste $500-600 bucks on this. Another point worth mentioning is this version will surely have alot bugs that apple will improve upon in the 2nd generation lunch so wait till atleast December if you want one. ATT’s shop is just across the street from my office so I’ll be watching on friday
I’ll wait to see how the PHONE part works. I think it will be huge, but no one I know uses AT&T as a service (Verizon dominates the Northeast). As far as people are paying more money for phones, remember that most of those are for work related purposes, not the average consumer.
I am on the fence regarding the iPhone. I think I might wait for the next iteration to come out, as Apple usually does with all of its products. I hope the next version will be on the 3G network, because EDGE really blows. The phone should be available on other carriers, which I feel is a HUGE oversight, and the lack of SIM card tray is another bad idea. I also don’t like how much control AT&T and Apple have over the consumer with the iPhone.
Compared to other smart phones by Moto or HP or what, iPhone is NOT that expensive. Speaking to the tech that iPhone has, I believe those cell phone companies should start making their products more sense and stop treating us like an idiot.
Yawn…
I am a die hard Mac user and have yearned for a phone with all the functionality our european and Asian counterparts have.
This product is just a prettier face on the same old product.
My new BlackBerry does the same things it does…
Without uber-fast wireless networks to support it… This is just another phone…
I’m going back to sleep now.
This is typical Hollywood America. Hype over the name. The Ipod isn’t so great. Application stinks. I expect the phone to flop especially for the price they are asking. Too big.
I will definitely be getting the Iphone on Friday. My favorite feature is going to be visual voicemail. I am tired of everyone comparing it to a smartphone. I have never even owned a smartphone. I currently have a RAZR. Due to the keyboard on my phone, I rarely ever send a text message and have never sent an email. I am looking forward to having a full keyboard with predictive text that actually works right.
Maybe it will shake the dust off of the other manufacturers to make a better/more functional product.
After all the initial hype dies down, everyone will realize that it is an EXPENSIVE phone. Its easy to talk the talk with all the hysteria, but will people shell out $600 from their pockets to buy the phone which DOES NOT HAVE all the features of a true smart phone. Sure it may look cool, but my guess is everyone will take a wait and see approach before rushing out to buy one. Most smartphone users use their phones for work and i think the blackberry Curve is really going to throw a curve ball at the iphone at this point.
I’ve been a Mac user all my life and I’m really excited about the new Iphone. I just hope it lives up to all the hype.
I think the biggest problem isn’t so much the price. It’s getting out of my current contract and then signing up for AT&T’s service, which all my friends say sucks. Apple needs to find a way to let more carriers offer it.

I WILL NOT buy one. They are merely just another toy for folks to play with. I am 68, ride a Harley most of the time, and daily observe PUBLIC DUMB’s by IQ challenged drivers with CellPhoneitis. Mostly a solution seeking a problem….
