Thought all you had to worry about was the economy? Think again – one of our CNN producers forwarded me an email a few minutes ago claiming to be from the IRS and offering to help her access a refund of $189.60. This is a SCAM – no two ways about it. The IRS doesn’t contact taxpayers by email. This recession is prime time for fraudsters – don’t fall victim.

HI GERRI:THIS MAY NOT BE THE RIGHT PLACE TO ASK THIS QUESTION, BUT I DON’T KNOW WHERE ELSE TO GO. I HAVE SEEN ONLINE JOBS ON CNN. HOW DO I GO ABOUT CONTACTING THE RIGHT ONES? ALOT OF THEM ARE SCAMS AND JUST WANT MONEY RIGHT UP FRONT. CANNOT AFFORD THIS. NEED TO WORK FROM HOME RIGHT AWAY. PLEASE HELP. IF THIS IS NOT THE RIGHT PLACE, CAN YOU PLEASE FORWARD IT TO THE RIGHT PLACE? DESPERATE AND THANKS,
OLGA

The question people should ask themselves is –

If I never put this particular email address on any IRS form, why are they sending me this notice ?

Still, the SPAM filters for all email providers should look for such things and flag such an email as potentially fraudulent.
